Introduction

Reframing the Park as Urban Connector

Developed for the Naoussa Municipal Park competition, the proposal reimagines the park as a civic landscape capable of reconnecting the city with its environmental, cultural, and touristic context. Located at the eastern edge of Naoussa, the park operates as both urban threshold and public observatory, shaped by its strong topography, historical identity, and visual relationship with the surrounding landscape. The proposal transforms the existing fragmented condition into a continuous public environment organized through movement, ecology, and collective activity.

Challanges

Connecting Flows, Landscape, and Public Life

Our design approach is structured by the following elements: spatial clusters, paths-flows and intermediate transition zones that satisfy a variety of aesthetic, functional, ecological and sustainable objectives. We identify three (3) clusters: The Hardscape The Central axis The Organic lake These spatial identities are connected through a looping circulation system and a series of transitional zones that allow movement, gathering, and ecological continuity to coexist within a unified landscape framework. Rather than separating programs into rigid zones, the proposal introduces flexible public spaces capable of supporting different forms of appropriation over time. Gardens, plazas, amphitheaters, playgrounds, and observation areas are distributed across the park as part of a continuous spatial sequence. The circulation network is organized through two primary flows, one internal and one peripheral, forming a continuous loop that reconnects the park with the surrounding urban fabric while framing views toward the city and landscape. Variations in planting, texture, and materiality gradually guide visitors between different spatial atmospheres without imposing hard boundaries.

Final thoughts

Landscape as Collective Infrastructure

The proposal approaches the park as both ecological system and civic framework, where movement, public life, and environmental restoration operate together rather than independently. Through flexible public spaces, collective gardening areas, and adaptable landscape elements, the project encourages participation and everyday appropriation while strengthening the role of the park within the broader identity of Naoussa.
